Trim Levels

The 2018 Toyota Highlander is available in six trim levels - the LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited, and Limited Platinum. Exterior equipment on the LE includes heated side mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, a windshield wiper de-icer, and rear privacy glass. With the LE Plus comes a flip-up rear window, fog lights, and a height-adjustable power liftgate, while the XLE boasts roof rails, a sunroof, and keyless entry. Sportier drivers will like the SE, which has LED running lights, a sport-tuned suspension, sporty styling elements, and 19-inch wheels.

Choosing the Limited trim gets you a unique set of 19-inch wheels and LED running lights. With the top trim level, features include automatic windshield wipers and a panoramic sunroof.

Engine

The base LE trim level comes with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine beneath its hood, which produces 184 pound-feet of torque and 185 horsepower. That engine pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission. The other five trim levels include a more powerful 3.5-liter V-6 engine, pumping out 263 pound-feet of torque and 295 horsepower. It works with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 is available as an upgrade on the LE trim.

Performance

All 2018 Highlander models come standard with front-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive is available as an option with the V-6 engine. With front-wheel drive and the 4-cylinder engine, the EPA fuel economy estimates are 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The V-6 engine actually gets better fuel efficiency, with estimates of 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive drops the estimates slightly to 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Interior

Standard interior features on the LE trim include a 60/40 split folding third-row seat, five USB ports throughout the cabin, a six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, rear air vents, and a 6.1-inch touch screen. Stepping up to the LE Plus comes with nicer trim and upholstery, tri-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an 8-inch touch screen, HD and satellite radio, and smartphone-enabled apps. With the XLE, you'll get leather upholstery, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, sunshades in the second row, and navigation.

Select the SE for sporty interior trim, or opt for the Limited to get heated and ventilated front seats, a rear cargo cover, heated captain's chairs in the second row, a premium 12-speaker JBL audio system, and driver seat memory settings. With the top Limited Platinum, standard equipment includes a heated steering wheel and a heated second row. A rear-seat entertainment system is available as an upgrade on the upper four trim levels.

Safety Features

All 2018 Toyota Highlander models come equipped with a rearview camera, anti-lock brakes, air bags throughout all three rows of seating, stability and traction control, and the Toyota Safety Sense package, which includes automatic high beams, lane departure intervention, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning with automatic braking. With the XLE, you also get blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Limited has rear parking sensors. The top Limited Platinum adds a 360-degree parking camera system and front parking sensors.
